Airplane math from wsj: “The sweet spot for fuel economy is often the basic single-aisle jet, often producing mpg better than bigger planes and superior to smaller regional jets as well. Boeing says the champ in its current line-up is the 737-900 with 180 passengers flying 1,000 miles. It gets nearly 99 mpg. The plane with the best average mpg in Airbus's current line-up is the A320 family.“
Yeah you call tell that article was written by someone who has exactly zero understanding of aircraft fuel consumption. MPG? Miles per gallon? Not even a standard of measure in the world of aircraft. Planes don't burn "gallons". Planes burn "pounds". Pounds per hour. When you get the most basic, fundamental things like that wrong, there's no point in even reading it.
The Department of Transportation Statistics publishes data on seat miles per gallon: https://www.bts.dot.gov/archive/publications/special_reports_and_issue_briefs/special_report/2012_03_33/table_06 And the Energy Department publishes comparison charts based on passenger-miles per gallon: https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10311 Maybe they don't know what they're talking about either. (Note that, according to the comparison chart, airlines get much higher passenger-miles per gallon than light trucks.)
