I snap photos and film my kids because we have a large family, the closest of whom is Orlando. Our extended family is spread around the US and internationally and many want to see the kids grow up. The ones who are international, have seen the kids once in 8 years, but they still want to see photos of the kids. I also take photos and film because when I was little, my parents didn't and I have very few photos growing up. I'd like my kids to have more, since I wanted to have more. I make sure that I take at least a dozen or so photos each month or at special places to make sure to track their growth and what we did. In 5 years, I won't remember what they looked like when we went to the playground or how they looked on the train at the mall. My photos are digital and kept on the computer and I do check every year or two to look at them growing. Also, in the first few years, I used to make a book at Christmas time for the grandmothers who didn't get nearly as much time with the grandkids as they wanted so I would do a Shutterfly book with various events throughout the year and snaps. Both grandmothers (one now passed) loved these books and took them around to show their friends, etc. Once they were past about 3, I don't really interact much with the kids on the playground. They can play on their own. I interact with them when we walk to and from the playground, I talk with them in the car and when we are doing other things. When we are at playgrounds and places, I want them to experience the place. I don't really need to experience it. I don't need to pet the animals or climb on the monkey bars. But I can watch and document them doing so. Not really sorry if I am enjoying documenting my child enjoying the playground.
