I used to believe that Labs are just fantastic with kids, and they are, the problem is that sometimes some of them are not. I started following media nad within the last decade there was a lot of horrible accidents with labs and kids. Just very unfortunate.
The same with German Shepherds.
Hence my belief that it is good to have a small companion dog for kids who will be great alert dog that will make plenty noise to scare someone away and alarm adults if and as needed but in general dogs should be always supervised and kids should be educated what is okay and what is not okay comes to playing with dogs. However, the smaller the dog the less damage in any case. 
People will advise  you plenty.

I am not entirely familiar with this breed but my neighbor has two of them, often roaming back yard, you can not see the dogs due to high fence but for a long time I was sure he has German shepherds or  some other GIGANTIC breed because they bark so low and so loud. It was amazing, what a cool trick.
I would assume they must be also adorable.
