Our Labradoodle.

People who come to the door are terrified of our lack lab (who wouldn’t hurt a fly). She just blends into the the shadows and so when she jumps up at the door people aren’t expecting it. I’ve seen people running to their car from her.

I think a big part of it is the color. People are particularly scared of black dogs. It’s good and bad.

My dog spent 5 minutes this afternoon barking at a giant teddy bear that my neighbors had put in their driveway to throw away. Thank god we are safe now.

OP here - I love this dog! I have never heard about this breed before - looks so cute. I am going to look into them.

We know three of them. Very high-energy and big diggers. Be prepared! Also one family went to a breeder in Canada and the other to one in Washington state, so I think they’re not that easy to find.

We have one. Got him in Pa. He is sleeping on the couch right now. We walk him twice a day and take him to the park every other day. He loves playing catch and fetch, gets a long with all the dogs at the park. He is an easy going dog who loves kids. He is not high energy like a border collie, but he will stay out 8 hours with my DD and friends playing in the park. No digging problem or any craziness...he just wants to please people and have a job. My daughter and him are inseparable. When she was sick he just laid beside she all day. He is very protective of the house and her. The breed is wary of strangers. He is very alert. The Italians say this breed sleeps with one eye open. Anyone approaching the house he will let you know. He has a loud bark. This is a great dog. It is the base breed for the poodle, labs and any water dog. They have great eyes.

We had a Pyrenees Lab mix. He was huge and sometimes intimidating to strangers, but so sweet. He would bark, but pretty quickly start wagging his tail and become very friendly. I loved that gentle giant. We had him pre-kid, and he was completely tolerant and docile with our child.

I like the sign idea. Whenever I'm walking my lab alone and a strange person is coming towards us I always bring the leash tight and tell the dog not to bark so as to make him seem crazy and vicious, which he is not. But people are still scared of him.

NP. We have signs on our backyard fence at both gates (either side of the house) and another sign in the window of our front door.

I would suggest not to get too big of a dog because big dog can do a big damage if something snaps in their head and sometimes it just can happen.

I used to believe that Labs are just fantastic with kids, and they are, the problem is that sometimes some of them are not. I started following media nad within the last decade there was a lot of horrible accidents with labs and kids. Just very unfortunate.
The same with German Shepherds.
Hence my belief that it is good to have a small companion dog for kids who will be great alert dog that will make plenty noise to scare someone away and alarm adults if and as needed but in general dogs should be always supervised and kids should be educated what is okay and what is not okay comes to playing with dogs. However, the smaller the dog the less damage in any case.
People will advise you plenty.

I am not entirely familiar with this breed but my neighbor has two of them, often roaming back yard, you can not see the dogs due to high fence but for a long time I was sure he has German shepherds or some other GIGANTIC breed because they bark so low and so loud. It was amazing, what a cool trick.
I would assume they must be also adorable.

My lab has a ferocious bark that scares the crap out of people. But if those people actually opened the door he'd just wag his tail and lay there. He just sounds like he'd kill you if you ring the doorbell.
