I’m an ICU nurse and I’ve taken care of plenty of patients in liver failure who end up dying after being on a vent, after they are yellow with jaundice, pooping on themselves because we’re trying to lower their ammonia levels, and confused because they have hepatic encephalopathy. It’s a terrible way to live out the end of your days. Nothing I can say on a message forum can convince an alcoholic to stop drinking, because it’s an addiction. But to anyone reading this who is, please get help. It’s a terrible, terrible way to die, and you can prevent yourself from dying from it. Today. Right now.
Hey, the upside is you don't have to live very long in that state. By the time you get to debilitating liver failure, you've only got a couple weeks, and you're pretty out of it during that time. So really, it's not too bad, at least compared to cancer, CHF, ACD, COPD, ALS, dementia, or whatever else kills people over years of suffering. Heart attack or massive stroke in your sleep is still the winning lottery ticket when it comes to checking out though.
