Given that other regions have tryouts in the summer, I wonder if a variant of that would work here. For example, clubs could offer roster spots to returning players at the end of July/after Nationals with acceptance and deposit required by August 1st. Clubs post their returning players by mid-August (technically, before the high school season begins) and submit those partial rosters to CHRVA. Any players that accept the offer to return would not participate in any tryouts during the "normal" Oct/Nov window ... and can focus on finishing their HS season. Players who do not accept an offer to return can test the waters at other clubs (during clinics and tryouts) ... and could still try out for any remaining roster spots at their previous club. If a club doesn't offer a spot to a returning player, both parties know where they stand. When the tryout weekends roll around, everyone would already know how many roster spots remain on a particular team and can decide to participate in club tryouts accordingly.
Personally, I prefer the late fall tryout model over the summer model that some other regions use. Players get a chance to reflect on the past season and explore other options through camps and clinics before deciding where to tryout for next season. While most clubs have some number of returners every year, forcing players to decide if they want to play for the same club next season immediately at the end of the prior season seems like it would just be stressful in a different way and could result in some players not exploring more competitive clubs for fear of losing their advantage for a spot with last season’s club.
Totally agree with this. So much can happen between the summer after club season and the start of the next club season. I'd think players would want to have flexibility to try out for other (better or better for them for some reason) teams. And clubs as well - there's a reason no one should expect loyalty to returning players from a club - clubs are always interested in new-to-them players who are kicking butt. Would clubs really want to be limited to the best players on their last team when who knows what level of player might show up for tryouts (especially in the DMV that has so many people and so much transition). Seems very much in club's favor to see who their best options are right before the season begins instead of choosing the returning players and then waiting 3 or 4 months to see who else is around and, after offering all empty spots to the best players at tryouts, possibly still having to turn away players better than the returning players they already committed to because they're full.
