The Development Office of your local private and of colleges/universities (and they do talk to each other) is in charge of raising money for the school, usually from big donors.

"Development kids" are kids who are specifically targeted by the Development Office for admission due to the prospect and/or promise of a large donation. Generally, their stats, either academic or athletic, are below what would be expected for admission to these schools. I am not saying that is the case in this situation; this is just general information.

While Duke and other schools targeted by this administration do have large endowments, they are limited in what they can do with that money, thus  the recent layoffs and bending the knee to many of Trump's demands. Development Offices all over are now scrambling to make up the lost funds, because the cuts have affected all departments and all areas, not just research and DEI offices. Hopefully the money will allow another child with fewer advantages to attend the school, or it keeps cancer research going, instead of the schools re-doing the turf or something.   [/quote]
