So you are saying if you pledge to spend a lot of money you can be placed on the lacrosse team? Seems odd. If that was the case, I would think there would be lots of families that would spend big bucks to be on the Duke Lacrosse team - particularly all of the NE boarding school types. I don’t see that on their roster.

What is a "development kid"?

The Development Office of your local private and of colleges/universities (and they do talk to each other) is in charge of raising money for the school, usually from big donors.

"Development kids" are kids who are specifically targeted by the Development Office for admission due to the prospect and/or promise of a large donation. Generally, their stats, either academic or athletic, are below what would be expected for admission to these schools. I am not saying that is the case in this situation; this is just general information.

While Duke and other schools targeted by this administration do have large endowments, they are limited in what they can do with that money, thus the recent layoffs and bending the knee to many of Trump's demands. Development Offices all over are now scrambling to make up the lost funds, because the cuts have affected all departments and all areas, not just research and DEI offices. Hopefully the money will allow another child with fewer advantages to attend the school, or it keeps cancer research going, instead of the schools re-doing the turf or something.

I wonder if Uncle Rico hangs out solo at bars wearing DCE gear telling everyone how they coulda won the big game if only coach woulda put his son in more and that his son should be the one going to Duke?

Give it a rest. The kid barely even hit the stat sheet for DCE. He wanted to go Ivy, but they didn’t call. A year later, he’s now going to Duke, but let’s not pretend it’s O’Neal heading to Durham.

Just goes to show, you can earn All-Met, All-State, and a commitment from Duke lacrosse, but still not get the coveted DCUM seal of approval from anonymous jealous parents who just *know* their kid is better. If only Danowski would look their way.

Duke has a 12 Billion Dollar endowment. Even at 5% interest that is $600 million per year in interest. On top of that, full pay families at Duke like the kid we are talking about will have a total estimated four year total cost of attendance at 372K. The fact that public funds are given to these private institutions is ridiculous. Time for Duke and these other schools to cut the fat.

there is lots of politics on all travel teams. I grant you that NL 2027 is one of the worst, but no travel team is a pure meritocracy, and certainly not DCE 2026. But college teams ARE a meritocracy, which explains why recruiting results do not always align with the depth chart on the travel team from which the player came.
