I was recently reading a book by a holocaust survivor whose mother hid her in a backpack and smuggled her into a concentration camp then disguised her as a short adult so she’d be placed on work detail rather than killed.  It seems totally preposterous but it did save her daughter’s life.  If you were that mother, in that moment, how on earth could you know what would be most likely to save your daughter?  Tell her to run and hide?  Beg the guards?  Have her play dead?  Hide her in a backpack and bring her with you? All completely terrible options.  It’s really hard to say what choice you would make when you have minutes to decide, really incomplete information about the relative risks, and any decision will likely result in death.

Throughout history, a lot of women have made really awful choices trying to give their children the best shot.  I can’t Monday morning quarterback those choices when I’m not in their position.[/quote]
