When people follow Jesus they become part of the plan to bring his kingdom way of living (upside down: serve others. Give away your stuff. Love radically and unconditionally) to the chaotic world. The gospels are for Christian’s to be changed, not to issue edicts for others to change. We change by trying to live like Jesus and the result of a life of peace and love and promoting flourishing for all life is people who get to see a little bit of gods kingdom here on earth. That’s it. Anything else is a shallow attempt at behavior modification or to sell something.

Well put.  There is horrible rot on both "ends" of the church.  How about a Christianity that takes mission and mercy and injustice and inequality seriously while also believing in the wisdom and protection of God's Law and Biblical living?

You can rightly hate the hypocrisy of the patriarchy and the right-wing alignment of the American evangelical church and also hate the emptiness of the doctrine and the left-wing alignment of the American progressive church.

Jen thinks the right response is some sort of grotesque, performative Sex In The City lifestyle.

I was a wild young woman once and did hook up culture before it was cool.  It was a real death of the soul and spirit.  It crushed me.  I am very frank with my daughters about this.  I still live with the ghosts 25+ years later.[/quote]
