I completely got Kate's speech to Toby. I struggle with my weight, though nowhere near to the point of the character, and I feel that way about my high metabolism DH. I can't maintain the same eating habits as him, and sometimes I just want to scream when he asks why I'm eating half as much as him. We've been together forever, we love each other, we have children, so it's more a frustration than a dealbreaker -- but Kate and Toby don't have a lengthy history to fall back upon. I totally get why she walked away.
I would have understood Kate's speech if her character actually had dating experience. She said to Toby that she couldn't fall in love with a fat person, but her character had dated anyone. Plus the fact that she described how miserable she was being fat and how she always dreamed of having a relationship like you'd see in the movies. Now that she had the wonderful relationship, she was still miserable. Serious lack of imagination. Not every date has to be dinner out. Go to a museum, go bowling, the movies. Her character seems so shallow and not worthy of Toby.
Did Kate say she hadn't dated anyone before? I didn't get the impression that she was a virgin when she and Toby had sex.
That was my impression. However, her being miserable when being in a great relationship is just pathetic.
But the point is that another person can't make you happy when you have other things bringing you down. She needs to fix her own issues before she can be in a relationship.
Very true. Plus I know opinions on this will differ, but I don't find the relationship that great. Toby was horribly controlling in the Steelers game episode, and Kate was totally nuts about his ex-wife.
Agreed. A disfunctional relationship between two fat freaks.
