Anyone catch what Randall said to his mom st the door at the end? Something like "I must have been very _____ then." Then he said, see you at Christmas. ?

So are we shot of Olivia? I hope so; Kevin needs a better storyline

I read somewhere on the Internet - so who knows if it's true or not - that the actress who plays Kate has a clause in her contract that she has to lose weight as her character does.

I agree with this. As a Black woman, I think the relationship between Beth and Randall is so, so real. She isn't teetering on the brink of an ABW; she LOVES her husband and she is fiercely protective of him because he is a sensitive soul (and has been since he was little). If this were a white couple, everyone would applaud the wife because white women are stereotypically perceived as passive and Black women are stereotypically perceived as strong, tough and angry all the damn time. These are just false constructs that we've created in our minds. I know plenty of assertive, take-no-prisoners white women who will slay a dragon for their family and I know plenty of docile, passive Black women who "stay in their place".

Randall is a gentle guy who started off with a bad break; drug addicted parents. He's not magical, he's a broken guy with a happy life because he hasn't been able to put the pieces together yet. As the pieces of his life slowly start to take shape, I think we will see a guy who will be emotionally drained for a while. And if I'm his wife... I'm going to do all I can to make sure that the people around him are transparent and loving.

I agree with you, but just wanted to point out the Magical Negro phenomenon applies only to William. It has nothing to do with the other black characters. Google it.

Not necessary to google anything. If you are the PP above, the statement was: "Someone mentioned it earlier and I'm starting to agree that the black characters are slipping into 'magical negro' territory (especially William)." I responded because this poster said "black characters". You should probably google plural.

I struggle with my weight, though nowhere near to the point of the character, and I feel that way about my high metabolism DH. I can't maintain the same eating habits as him, and sometimes I just want to scream when he asks why I'm eating half as much as him.

We've been together forever, we love each other, we have children, so it's more a frustration than a dealbreaker -- but Kate and Toby don't have a lengthy history to fall back upon. I totally get why she walked away.

I would have understood Kate's speech if her character actually had dating experience. She said to Toby that she couldn't fall in love with a fat person, but her character had dated anyone. Plus the fact that she described how miserable she was being fat and how she always dreamed of having a relationship like you'd see in the movies. Now that she had the wonderful relationship, she was still miserable.

Serious lack of imagination. Not every date has to be dinner out. Go to a museum, go bowling, the movies. Her character seems so shallow and not worthy of Toby.

Did Kate say she hadn't dated anyone before? I didn't get the impression that she was a virgin when she and Toby had sex.

That was my impression. However, her being miserable when being in a great relationship is just pathetic.

But the point is that another person can't make you happy when you have other things bringing you down. She needs to fix her own issues before she can be in a relationship.

Very true. Plus I know opinions on this will differ, but I don't find the relationship that great. Toby was horribly controlling in the Steelers game episode, and Kate was totally nuts about his ex-wife.

Agreed. A disfunctional relationship between two fat freaks.

Wow, that's really mean.

Yeah, you need to can't expect anyone to fix you. But someone putting off a relationship b/c you're obsessed with something pretty much your entire life is unhealthy. If the character had been struggling with anorexia since she'd been a tween then I bet the message would have been she was worthy of love. For the fat person, the message is fix yourself first.

Maybe grand marnier? She was adding orange zest too, right?

I didn't catch what the bottle looked like but I have made a cranberry dish with Amaretto that's really good.
