You really stopped making sense in the second paragraph there. Lots of chubby kids who aren't redheads (Manny on Modern Family, for example). The examples you listed are from 30+ years ago.[/quote]

Yes, dear, I realize that.  It's a cliche.  I realize chubby kids come in various shades but there is definitely type casting.  Manny's character may be chubby, but he's probably one of the only Hispanic characters now on the big or little screens.  He's an outlier in so many ways, but that's sort of the point of Modern Family--traditional marriage, divorce, remarriage, gay marriage, trophy wife, step children, adopted children, hispanic and asian cast members.  I'm waiting for Haley to start dating a Jewish, black guy and for Alex to become a lesbian, but I don't think the show will last long enough.

The more things change, the more things stay the same in TV or movies...

Little Giants (a movie made 20 years ago with the token fat kid, black kid etc.)
