Yes, I was impressed by that too!

Also, why is it that pretty much every fat kid character in the movies either has red hair and freckles like Chunk from the Goonies, that kid from the Sandlot, Jerry O'Connell from Stand By Me, or has a name like Goldberg, Engleberg, or Zoltek?

You really stopped making sense in the second paragraph there. Lots of chubby kids who aren't redheads (Manny on Modern Family, for example). The examples you listed are from 30+ years ago.

Yes, dear, I realize that. It's a cliche. I realize chubby kids come in various shades but there is definitely type casting. Manny's character may be chubby, but he's probably one of the only Hispanic characters now on the big or little screens. He's an outlier in so many ways, but that's sort of the point of Modern Family--traditional marriage, divorce, remarriage, gay marriage, trophy wife, step children, adopted children, hispanic and asian cast members. I'm waiting for Haley to start dating a Jewish, black guy and for Alex to become a lesbian, but I don't think the show will last long enough.

The more things change, the more things stay the same in TV or movies...

Little Giants (a movie made 20 years ago with the token fat kid, black kid etc.)

Stranger Things (a tv show made in the last year with the token fat kid, black kid etc.)

Our Gang (a tv show made more than 30 years ago when the world didn't have color, but there's still a token fat kid and surprisingly a token black kid)

So much is formulaic.

There is no "fat" kid in Stranger Things. Just the kid with the deformed teeth. He is not fat. Didn't you watch the show??

Wow, this is super interesting. I look forward to seeing how the story line plays out, knowing this. At her size, you have to lose a pretty substantial amount for it to be noticeable & visible in clothing. Of course, they also have lighting, wardrobe & makeup, camera, and scene setup tricks to help amplify the difference. For me, at 5'9" and 330 lbs, it took losing a good 50 lbs before it was obvious to others that I was losing weight. It also takes longer to go between clothes sizes. The smaller the size, the less pounds it takes to go up or down one size, in my experience.

She's 5'5", so maybe the loss will be noticeable more quickly on her, but I also think she is probably heavier than 330 unless they're adding padding. I wonder if she'll seek out any medicine or any of the new "interventions" -- there's weight loss surgery (probably the fastest way to lose if it's key to the story line), but there is also a new weight loss "balloon" that is supposed to be available in January. You actually swallow them as capsules, they're inflated in your stomach, and then after 6 months they are removed through a relatively simple surgery (compared to full WLS). It seems insane to me and like a huge setup for extreme regain after they're removed, but in a situation like this. I could see it actually being a setup for her to be a spokeswoman if she does it. It's interesting that she just now came out and revealed this contract clause (also possible that since the show is doing well, she's just now getting the opportunity to speak). Can definitely see the timing be some sort of promotion... me and my conspiracy theories.

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2016/11/17/new-weight-loss-balloon-is-nearly-twice-as-effective-as-diet-and-exercise.html

Sidenote, the headline looks good, but here's the real stats - less than 7% of body weight lost isn't that impressive to me in 6 months -- it's safe to lose up to 1% per week for most people, and I've averaged right around that on Weight Watchers & low carb:
After six months, those who got the real Obalon treatment had lost 6.81 percent of their total body weight (about 25 percent of their “excess body weight,” or the amount they’d have to lose to have a BMI in the normal range), while those in the placebo group had lost only 3.59 percent. So, for example, for people who weighed 200 pounds and needed to lose 50, those in the Obalon treatment group would have lost 13.6 pounds compared with 7.2 pounds in the control group.

Metz has said elsewhere that she opposes weight loss surgery for herself but not necessarily for her character.

And look at Jerry O'Connell now - yum!

#1. LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT THING YOU HAVE TO SWALLOW! With a tube attached!! WTF, I don't think I could do that.

#2. She only needs to lose 15 lbs!?!?!?

What a scam. Seriously, she'll have that thing in her for 3 months to "jumpstart" her weight loss. Well, duh, of course it will. It takes up room in your stomach so you can't over eat. Well, you probably could and just end up vomiting everything up including the device.

The problem with this kind of product is that it may make you lose weight initially, but it does nothing to change habits for the long term. You could achieve the same effect by drinking lots of water b/f meals. Man, people are gullible and desperate.

She's not padded, but Toby is.

I'm pretty sure she isn't padded because I saw her in an interview and she's really that large. I would think surgery is a probably path for someone like her. I'm a good 50 pounds overweight so I'm not trying to shame her. She's a wonderful actress and quite beautiful, IMO.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I like Kevin's character. He's immature and needy, largely because he always felt like the overlooked child growing up (I can relate). He's also warm, funny, and narcissistic at the same time, has layers. I thought the scene with him meeting Randall's bio dad and his interactions with his SIL and the dad were great. I'm just less interested in the whole acting thing.
