It’s the Western HS that jumped in front of other short-term projects, even though it will share a border with another HS with 700 empty seats, and they need to be fully transparent about which other planned renovation projects have been delayed as a result of that decision and how much more they now plan to spend on Western. It’s fine if they want to defend their decision but they need to be transparent.
Herndon doesn’t have 700 seats, unless you want it to be at 100% capacity. The over crowded schools are not that close to Herndon, to get the kids there you would need to shift boundaries far more so then is happening now. Given how well the current shift is happening, it is not surprising that was not selected. The schools that could be moved to Herndon would greatly increase the FARMs percentage, which would only make the issues with herndon test scores and the like worse. The Western School has been needed for 20 years, it has been in the CIP because it was needed. A school, conviently at the site that the Western School was supposed to be built, came available. The County bought it. It will bring donw over crowding in 2 schools and prevent over crowding at 3 more schools. The number of students that needed to be moved out of Chantilly and Centerville is greater then the seats available at Herndon. McLean needs to be renovated in a bad way and it is not the only school. The need for a new school and renovation exist at the same time. Sorry that the area that has been asking for this for 20 years was able to get the school before McLean was renovated. I also suspect that your main concern with those Herndon spots is making sure that no one from Langley is moved into those open spots.
The majority of the CIP projects that are likely being deferred due to the KAA purchase are schools in western Fairfax built in the 70s and 80s. You act like nothing happened to address capacity needs in western Fairfax since a potential new western HS was first floated, but the reality is that capital dollars were instead spent on expansions at South Lakes, Oakton, and Herndon. And then of course there was the plan to expand Centreville, the current status of which remains unclear. It appears one part of the county gets a new school, and everyone else just gets told to shut up and expect boundary changes.
