Our school is majority Latino with a high proportion of students coming from immigrant families. I see the walk out as a protest and probably more importantly, a show of solidarity with each other. A lot of these kids see ICE in their neighborhoods, know people have been detained or deported. There is something special about peers getting together and publicly saying what is happening to you is wrong and we are here to support you.
But the protest has nothing to do with school. Kids are required to be in school to learn. Schools clubs/organizations that want to support immigrant students can sponsor/host/organize an event or protest open to the study body outside of school hours. School isn’t the place to be trying to exercise right to protest federal government policy. It also takes staff away from their roles bc now adults need to go outside too and supervise all the walk out students.
So with that reasoning, there shouldn't be anything going on in the schools that aren't academic? No pep rally? No being excused from class to go to your game? No end of year field trips to Hershey Park or Kings Dominion? There is a lot of time wasted in High School. The walk out is maybe 2 hours out of 180 days of school. Let the kids exercise their right to free speech in a safe space.
