While Supreme Court approved Indiana voter ID, Indiana provides a free ID for anyone who needs it for voting purposes. That is the catch here. If we want to have voter ID without violating the Constitution, it must be provided for free.
I have posted the same numerous times in this thread. If the GOP included funding for a state ID card used for voting, then no one would complain. This is a poll tax and unduly complicated, particularly for married women who don't have the access or money to jump through the hoops to comply. Ironically, this impacts more women in red states than blue ones.
It's easy to think this was accidental but there is no way they didn't intend for this confusion to happen. They just want deniability until its a done deal. They need to give Susan Collins and her ilk cover. "i had no idea i was voting for the end of democracy."
Also will not be surprised if certain states/jurisdictions raise prices as well as thresholds to obtain these documents - "prove to us that you were married here, then we will release the certificate" etc.
They're already rolling back programs that allowed libraries and nonprofits to process these document requests for people. They'll be shortening hours, closing satellite offices etc. We've seen the same song and dance around polling places as they've eliminated or restricted early voting in key districts. Republicans are cheaters, preparing to cheat to ensure we never have another democratic election. The idea of changing course to actually appeal to voters is just too crazy. They've decided to dismantle our democracy instead.
