This thread makes me feel like I live on an entirely different planet. I can't remember the last time I was on a flight with empty seats - usually they're begging people to check carry-ons because it's full. So switching seats would be impossible.
I fly a lot, and many of the flights I take are 80% full or less. Travel to non-warm destinations (Europe for example) in the fall and winter, or just about anywhere on a Saturday afternoon/evening. Saturday is the least busy day of the week for flying.
Saturday? Why? I doubt that.
Why who flies on a Saturday night? You're losing half the weekend.
I end up flying Saturdays for at least 1/3 of my business trips. The conferences I attend (academia) typically run Thursday-Saturday. I fly out as soon as it finishes on Saturday to save on hotel costs (and to get home sooner to see my kids). Even big airports like LAX are pretty quiet then. Also if I'm flying to Asia, I'll fly out on Saturday. That means arriving Sunday afternoon (crossing the date line), so I have a bit of time to recover before meetings on Monday.
