Anecdotal evidence but my center right TX friends HATE Paxton. I think they are fed up with Republicans in general right now, but if Paxton is on the ticket they will for sure go vote against him.

Further anecdotal evidence but two guys I went to HS with in very deep red West Texas have both recently posted on social media about Christian values in response to some of the immigration actions and the racist Obama post by Trump. They are both pastors - one is the son of the former pastor of the First Baptist Church in my hometown. These are not liberal people, but I think they would vote for a James Talarico.
