So teachers don't get social security? Just curious.
In VA we do. In some states they don’t.
In Illinois one's SS benefits are greatly reduced if you get a pension. Teachers don't pay into SS when working for public schools, but we do over the summer, our second/third/fourth jobs and all the places we work between age 15-22 or after retiring from teaching. However, there is a lot of momentum around changing that. Some of us also save for retirement separately. I personally have a Roth IRA, a traditional IRA and a 403b (or something similarly named). I'm just too afraid that retirement benefits will be reduced due to the fund tanking. And I know I won't teach the full 34 years required in my "tier" to get the full 74%. I *might* make it to 22-24 years. My other retirement accounts will make up the difference.
