I think William is so lovable and perfect that its almost as if he really needs a bad trait (not just prior bad habits) - but they won't give him one because they are showing the "ideal"version of having a long lost father completely unknown to the family, move in and bond with everyone. There's no conflict. The only tension is "when is he going to die" and that's not really enough. Its indulgent.

I completely agree.  William is like someone straight out of Central Casting - elderly long-lost father, extremely likable and (of course) WISE, kind, good, delightful to be around.  Riiiiight.  I like his character (who wouldn't?), but find myself suspending belief every time he's on.

The eating issues were also silly.  I feel terrible for Kate though, working so hard and eating right, and only losing one pound.  Ouch.  I still think having gastric bypass would at least give her a fighting chance.
