I think Isobel and Dr Clarkson are much more alike but would have a very dry marriage of peers.  Lord Merton is a pushover but lovely and madly in love with Isobel.  I think they will have more of a yin/yang marriage.[/quote]

In some way, were they also trying to show an arc in her character? In the beginning they were the, gasp!, kinda middle class cousins! Matthew made a point of dressing himself! He was a doctor, of all things! Golly! She and Dr. Clarkson made sense then. In the end, she was a lady and fit well with a gentleman (a really adorable guy and a Peer). I think there was a message there. Class was such an issue in the other marriages, how could it not be present in this one?
