^Will help some
I doubt there is a single State that does not criminalize possession of firearms and/or ammunition by felons and other persons who would be prohibited under federal law; interstate firearm transfers; straw purchases and the like. This is the fundamental fraud of anti-firearm organizations. They cynically create the impression of an environment where firearms are a wholly unregulated free for all, when in fact there are multiple layers of duplicative federal and State regulation, covering many if not most or even all of the subjects they claim need still more regulation. Making criminal misconduct “more illegal-er” will not “help some.” It will not help at all, unless “help” is defined as moving the nation toward their goal of ultimately prohibiting private firearm ownership while ignoring the predations of criminals who already don’t obey the law, any law.
Sure it does. It give LEO more tools to fight gun trafficking. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2023/04/27/results-of-new-gun-control-laws/11734545002/ “President Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last summer, making it a federal crime to traffic in firearms and stiffening penalties for “straw purchases” made on behalf of people who aren’t allowed to own guns. Since then, new data from federal prosecutors shows they’ve charged 31 people in 17 cases under the new legislation. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman Carolyn Collins called the laws “powerful new tools.” Federal agents seized 23 firearms shown here from two suspects they say were illegally trafficking guns from Ohio to the Bronx in August 2022. The pair are charged with new gun trafficking law signed by President Biden. The changes to the federal Gun Control Act “are designed to enhance ATF’s ability to identify, deter, and investigate those who illegally divert firearms from lawful commerce,” Nothing about this “prohibits private firearm ownership”.
I’m sure that the OP and other CCW holders support laws like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Right?
OP here. I am comfortable with laws that make it harder for people legally prohibited from owning firearms from getting there hands on them, as long as those laws do not limit or infringe upon the rights of those who DO have a legal right to possess them. I would also agree that we need to increase penalties and the application of penalties for those who illegally possess firearms or use them for illegal purposes. Officers I have talked to are tired of arresting people for serious offenses and seeing them on the street days later. It's demoralizing and it reinforces the belief in the mind of the criminal that, in the words of the current chairman of the DC Council, "you can get away with murder in this city."
