Officially they don’t send conscripts to the frontline. Unofficially it does happen I think, but there is a large number of contracted troops (they are the majority). Not private army but the ones who signed a contract as opposed to have been drafted. Can’t speak to their level of training.[/quote]

When I lived in Russia, people would often start answers to questions with the predicate "In principal...." It was an indication of what was supposed to happen, but which never actually did happen.  I'd follow up -- "And in actual fact?"  From what I've been reading, the rule against sending conscripts to the front is totally bogus.  They make the conscripts sign contacts to get around t, or they send them to the annexed parts of Ukraine (basically all the places that fighting is now happening) which doesn't count as foreign deployment because of the fake annexation, or they just ignore it totally.  They are, for all intents and purposes, conscripts.  Some of them are hardened criminals though, because I don't think Wagner was the only one giving criminals a get out of jail for not-really-free card.  [/quote]
