I wish the state of the women's professional league was otherwise, and that Spirit was making money hand-over-fist and could sink serious funds into a true youth academy, like some of the MLS teams are doing on the men's side and like clubs do in Europe.  But that unfortunately is not yet the case for Spirit.  The Washington Post and other publications have written stories about Spirit's finances.  If its various youth programs were not helping Spirit's bottom line, then any sane business person would cut those youth programs and focus on improving profitability of the pro team's operations.

However, that is not the case, and Spirit's youth programs are currently helping the bottom line.  And that is a good thing.  Both for the future viability of the pro team, as well as the continuation of Spirit's DA youth operations.
