Back to the discussions at hand-Spirit parents were updated this morning and an announcement as to the club’s direction for the DA is expected in early February. Any FCV parents want to comment on a potential merger of Spirit VA and FCV?
Not a FCV parent. However, the rumor of a merger is not playing out. They will either dissolve or continue. Coaching staff, parents, and players want to continue. It's in the hands of the upper management. In the meantime...
Just a thought, any chance they pass operations to GFR, who keeps the Spirit branding and ancillary support, while the parent Spirit organization focuses on the pro team. Just an educated guess, considering they met with GFR involvement last week.
I doubt GFR would be granted a DA from US Soccer on their own merits at this point in time.
Why would they need to? WS would still retain the ownership of the DA and outsource the operations to GFR. They are already partner organizations. WS could keep Torres as the TD and oversight, but they would have a much lower operational overhead. I think US Soccer would be amenable to this, as they wouldn't need to lose a NWSL DA. It's a win for everyone. Except those here who want to see WS go down, of course.
For starters such an arrangement would not be free for GFR. And, if they have to pay then DA must be something that GFR actually wants to even have or run.
So? They would garner the lion share of the revenues paid by the players and would be able to use those funds. Are we saying that running a DA is a losing proposition? In that case, how does FCV even stay afloat, given that it's their primary draw? Since GFR was included in the meetings, I think it's a distinct possibility. They really don't need to be "on the same page" with Spirit simply dissolving.
There is a lot of commitment on the club end so it is not something a club would take lightly going into. It has to be something that they really want to do/be as a club. Just like players may not want the commitment of playing in DA or ECNL some clubs are just as happy serving their immediate community and may just not have ambitions beyond that.
