It's not just renting a spare room in someone's house. You can easily rent entire apartments/houses/villas that are solely for the tourist market. Lots of people use AirBnB to rent vacation houses for the week.

Yes, I know what it is I have plenty of friends who love it and plenty who don't want to deal with ever again.  I have no desire to stay in a strangers house with their personal belongings and clothes hanging in the closet.   If I am going to rent an entire house it will be through a local rental company where I have recourse and someone can make alternative accommodations if there is problem.  Or I will get a hotel room where I can relax, and enjoy myself. Renting a private residence is different from renting  house set up as a vacation rental home.

I just don't see the benefit of it.

To each their own though.
