I use Airbnb to rent an apartment that I don't live in and I know at least 6 other neighbors who are doing the same.

All of us have only used Airbnb and all have 5 star ratings.We have no desire to use the other services.

Our prices range from $75 to $160 a night for accommodations that I would consider 4 and 5 star (by hotels), near metro, etc. And they apartments all have kitchens, washer/dryer, luxury linens, beautiful designs, etc.

I've looked at some other sites, but it would be hard to find prices lower than what I've seen and experienced on Airbnb.

Here's my tip, especially if the place is used regularly as a rental: find the place on vbro or tripadvisor instead.

Yesterday I saved $100 by booking the same place on a different website.

I used HomeAway and love it!

I want to add that I would only consider staying in a place by myself. I have no desire to share.

I use VRBO, but not obsessively-- I still like staying in hotels esp. for shorter stays. Have never stayed in a place where the host was living.

It's not just renting a spare room in someone's house. You can easily rent entire apartments/houses/villas that are solely for the tourist market. Lots of people use AirBnB to rent vacation houses for the week.

Yes, I know what it is I have plenty of friends who love it and plenty who don't want to deal with ever again. I have no desire to stay in a strangers house with their personal belongings and clothes hanging in the closet. If I am going to rent an entire house it will be through a local rental company where I have recourse and someone can make alternative accommodations if there is problem. Or I will get a hotel room where I can relax, and enjoy myself. Renting a private residence is different from renting house set up as a vacation rental home.

I just don't see the benefit of it.

To each their own though.

Just got back from an AirBnb in Japan, which I've done many times before. In all cases, I had the entire apartment and the host was not even in town, so they either left a key in teh mailbox with a code to open it, or had a person meet me. I like not being hassled by hotel staff and maids since I sleep weird hours the first day while adjusting to jet-lag. Also nice to be located in a neighborhood with real people, eating at the local places and so on.

The key is to read the reviews very closely, and ask a few questions from teh host in advance (shows how responsive they are).
