OP - so sorry. We lost our sweet dear dog who was best buddies with our kitties. It just sucks. I'd recommend that you foster a pregnant cat. There are many shelters that would have a need - kitten season is coming now. We did this - very fun, rewarding experience. And if you Foster it's not a high stress pick out a replacement cat, instead you are helping a cat and her kittens. You could then pick out a kitten pair - or, just Foster again.
OP here, thank you, sorry about your dog. It is 2 weeks today and still hard. But now I do agree he had a good life and maybe even a good quick death so that is bringing some comfort. Somehow still guilty about lost time with him over the years, rushed into another cat/house/baby/job within 1-2 years of when we got him, maybe projecting my own life regrets. I think fostering is a good idea, but now i need to focus on my other 11 yr old cat with heart disease, she had a breath rate of 60 per minute, so I keep emailing and taking her to the vet. Just did xrays, cardio scheduled for tue, again maybe some of my guilt. I am also going to volunteer at the humane society after the orientation, that should give me some comfort, I keep going to petsmart to look at the black kitties. Mine was 4 when we got him and used to scratch us and pounce a bit, was a huge black cat and maybe not easily adoptable, so I do think bringing him home was a good deed. I do miss him in my life, how much ever I rationalize his death.
