MCPS is going to eliminate 80 central office positions and 370 school-based positions. http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Beat/2015/Hogan-Declines-to-Release-Extra-School-Funding/ What is the denominator? How many central office positions are there? How many school-based positions are there?
Does that mean there is a hiring freeze for elementary teachers or internal candidates only? How will they fund the growing schools who need more teachers?
School-based can mean media technicians, for example, and paras. They've already cut the hours for the paras which will hurt low-performing schools, for example. The core classes and grade level ES teachers are rarely cut, but even with that "perk" class sizes will grow. My daughter's 5th grade class this year has 28 students. They're EASY students, as we're in a solid cluster, but it's still a lot! I have classes of 29 in my special ed inclusion classes. It's impossible - even with a co-teacher (certified in English and sped) - to meet their needs.
