Is that meant as a general statement, or to OP? If to OP, then sure, I concur with the sentiments generally expressed already. If general, then no, anyone who sends their 10 year old way is no awful. There are plenty of kids who enjoy going for 4, 6 or even (gasp) 8 weeks for the summer to some cool place where there are tons of activities and and other kids who want to share in the bonding that takes place when kids can grow outside of their parents bubble.

The articles talks about ONE week of summer camp, not shipping your kids away for 6-8 weeks.  And sadly, most of the stuff they talk about:  sit down dinners, no video games, good sleep, nature, day trips, adventure, etc... usually don't happen when parents work all the time.  So they have to pay someone to offer that for their kids.  We get it.  No big deal.  [/quote]
