OP - I know you are stressed. I have been there. My first child had a seizure when he was 4 weeks old. He is 25 now and we still have no idea what caused it and it never happened again. Getting the IV started was very difficult. And my baby was fully hydrated. It took about eight sticks with four different people. Finally, a former combat medic was able to get the IV started. It was horrible. I was a wreck. But it wasn't the fault of the nurses. It's really tough to start an IV on a baby that tiny. A dehydrated baby is even more challenging. I also agree with the other posters. You should not have refused the spinal tap. You are assuming your baby has a stomach virus simply because he was exposed. There are many other things that can cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea in an infant. Many of them are life threatening. You are making it more difficult for the medical professionals to help your child. Take a deep breath. Step back. And let them do what they need to do. If it's too much for you, let someone else stay with the baby for a little while. Leave the hospital while they do the spinal tap if you need to.
