Im the previous poster who is a student w/ a LD. I have to say what really helped me was not so much the accommodations (of course those were helpful) but having someone tat taught me how to study and kept on top of me for the first semester. I honestly think the study skills, understanding how I learn and mentoring from an academic coach that truly has helped me and motivated me to succeed. My parents never thought in a million years that I would do this well and actually were prepping for me to fail out and come home after one semester.
Thank you, PP. I'm not OP but our DD is HS sounds a lot like you and it's really heartening to hear how you've grown and made the most of your abilities. It makes me feel more hopefull that our DD will find her way in her own time, with a little support and patience.
Your so welcome! I honestly never thought that I had the ability or motivation to go beyond a bachelors degree. I really would recommend encouraging your DD on her strengths and abilities. I always was under the impression because I had an LD, I didn't need to/want to achieve much. It was only until someone took the time to show me how that they believed in me and with study strategies that I could achieve as much as everyone else. I can't explain the amount of change and growth that has taken place from high school to college. My parents and past teachers have been amazed and are so so so proud. If you are interested and tell me a little bit more about your daughters LD then I might be able to suggest some schools.
