I am 41 and DH is 42. I have almost $300k in 401k and another almost $100k in IRA. I am embarrased to say I don't have full visibility into DH's accounts but I think he has as much or more than I do. We also have a large amount $500k or so "under the mattress" in a savings account - we know we need to do something more with that and keep thinking about finding a financial planner but some of it will go to a down payment on our next home. I feel like my 401k should be higher (I've pretty much always maxed it out) but I have a couple stints of graduate school in there so I haven't been in the job market the whole time since college.
Yikes. You missed out on about $100K in gains if you'd had that savings account in the stock market this year.
I am the PP and while I don't disagree with you it could easily have gone the other way (and has frequently in the recent past). We want to keep the money safe and accessible for when we do pull the trigger on a new house. but you've definitely given me a little more incentive to think about it and do SOMETHING.
