In a tax deferred account only? Or does this include money in a taxable account?

Its a tax-deferred account (profit sharing plan).

How did you get so much? Isn't the limit $5500k/yr?

I am 55, my 401k is just over $500k. I have some IRAs on top of that, maybe another $100k. DH has less, not sure how much.

Don't have info on what I had at 40 here at work, but at 41 I had $385,000, DH had about $275,000. We were making about $250,000 combined at the time.

I am embarrased to say I don't have full visibility into DH's accounts but I think he has as much or more than I do. We also have a large amount $500k or so "under the mattress" in a savings account - we know we need to do something more with that and keep thinking about finding a financial planner but some of it will go to a down payment on our next home.

I feel like my 401k should be higher (I've pretty much always maxed it out) but I have a couple stints of graduate school in there so I haven't been in the job market the whole time since college.

Yikes. You missed out on about $100K in gains if you'd had that savings account in the stock market this year.

I am the PP and while I don't disagree with you it could easily have gone the other way (and has frequently in the recent past). We want to keep the money safe and accessible for when we do pull the trigger on a new house.

but you've definitely given me a little more incentive to think about it and do SOMETHING.

Just started contributing, so only have about $40k in my retirement accounts at age 32. Expect to have about $200k by age 40. I'm a little behind.
