My ds is moving back in but I am not charging rent. That would feel very weird.
This I’ve always hated the thing where people collect rent from their children and then “give” it back like they are doing this enormous favor
Why do you hate this? We would absolutely do this with our kid, but it wouldn’t be some surprise / they would know. The goal is to teach saving / budgeting habits in a very concrete way. The real world expects those skills so it just seems like good parenting to help them learn them. The laundry thing in a fee posts of this thread floors me. Our kids have done their own since they were pre-teens. I would certainly help them out and do it during high stress, busy periods, and they would be appreciative of the favor. But it seems incredibly odd not to expect that of an adult in your home, and I feel sorry for the future roommates / spouses of young adults who still have all the home management done for them.
