my son does have a well paying job, but we live in arlington and our location is extremely convenient to his social life and commute. No point in his renting an obscenely expensive apartment close by. he’s dixie’s in saving his money and investing it for future growth. I guess an unwritten rule is he’s expected to be using this opportunity to invest and save.

I wish my kid would come home while she looks for a job, to save $, etc. She did after college, but now at 26, she values her independence too much. 😕

Y’all enable these kids and then get upset when they can’t handle real life.

My DS lived at home from graduation to December and it was a joy to have him. He did his own laundry of course, and did chores around the house when needed. Not sure what kind of young adults you've raised...

I think there needs to be a conversation. We know you are an adult. Do you still plan to join for dinner or do you want to do your own thing. Either is fine. Erc

You’d have to run electric and water to it, get separate meters, they might be a pain.

Why do you hate this?

We would absolutely do this with our kid, but it wouldn’t be some surprise / they would know. The goal is to teach saving / budgeting habits in a very concrete way. The real world expects those skills so it just seems like good parenting to help them learn them.

The laundry thing in a fee posts of this thread floors me. Our kids have done their own since they were pre-teens. I would certainly help them out and do it during high stress, busy periods, and they would be appreciative of the favor. But it seems incredibly odd not to expect that of an adult in your home, and I feel sorry for the future roommates / spouses of young adults who still have all the home management done for them.
