So what would happen on the boys side with ECNL and RL if MLS Next takes over? How would they decide which level each club or team should play at? Wouldn’t that just dilute MLS Next even more?
They will enter the MLS next tier system in some way. They will first close the deal then decide how to break it down. One idea that was presented is all the MLS Next HG clubs affiliated with MLS teams will have their own division and the only way to play in it is to get on one of their teams. After that it would be the current MLS Next HG teams, then the next tier is the MLS Next AD teams (this is where the current ECNL Boys will enter) then after that there will be some 3rd tier that will include RL, NAL, etc...and for tournaments/showcases any team could enter at any level they want if they are accepted and this is where the MLS Next HG would play the higher level MLS Next AD teams. The divisions outside of the MLS Next MLS affiliated teams like DC United would have promotion and relegation of some sort.
Doesn't make sense to me as current boys ECNL teams are much stronger than MLS B teams. Locally MLS B teams are just former RL or EDP teams, same players new shirt patch. Shrug.
I wonder if this will change over time. The strongest boys RL teams seem to be the ones with a top team in ECNL (or just two clubs merging to form ECNL). Maybe boys will choose AD over being on a second team that never gets a real shot at being moved up? Or AD over a club that tops out at RL? And of course the clubs with HG have strong AD teams there just aren’t as many of them.
