Because even this year, the flu shot will help you have a more mild case and avoid serious issues if you get the shot.

27 years ago (or 28) was a really bad flu year.  I got the shot.  I was off work for 2 weeks when I got the flu, despite being 27 and healthy.   However, people without the shot were out for almost a month.

So yes the shot helps, even if it is mismatched for the strains.

The flu shot was not recommended (as noted up thread) for the general population until around 2010. It existed, but it was not a universal recommendation until after the 09 H1N1 bonanza. 2002—recommended for babies and toddlers. 2008 it became a recommendation for kids up to age 10. And then 2010 for the universal recommendation.

So, maybe you are a doctor or nurse? To get the flu shot 27 years ago was not routine for adults at that time.
