Because even this year, the flu shot will help you have a more mild case and avoid serious issues if you get the shot.

27 years ago (or 28) was a really bad flu year. I got the shot. I was off work for 2 weeks when I got the flu, despite being 27 and healthy. However, people without the shot were out for almost a month.

So yes the shot helps, even if it is mismatched for the strains.

The flu shot was not recommended (as noted up thread) for the general population until around 2010. It existed, but it was not a universal recommendation until after the 09 H1N1 bonanza. 2002—recommended for babies and toddlers. 2008 it became a recommendation for kids up to age 10. And then 2010 for the universal recommendation.

So, maybe you are a doctor or nurse? To get the flu shot 27 years ago was not routine for adults at that time.

It’s almost as if there is a REASON these shots are recommended. Always helpful to remember that the government generally doesn’t move on its own. It’s never proactive. Every recommendation and safety regulation is written in blood.

DP. I had the flu in college in 1993 and did not need a recommendation to seek out the flu shot every year thereafter. So far, no flu since. Knock wood.

Handwashing is almost useless against flu. It's an airborne pathogen. Wear a mask and freak out about that as much as you want.

+100 The things that have been going around since 2020 and now this super flu which is killing more people than usual a flu season it's just easier to mask up. I'd rather wear a mask than catch the crap going around. It's just not a big deal to me it's better than being sick.

My mother (90s) and I had it. It was pretty mild, slightly elevated temperature, some digestive issues, but not bad. Took a while to fully go away but it was more just nuisance level. We both got flu shots but I kind of doubt that’s why it was mild since they say it isn’t a good match.

I did not have a flu shot. And I had the flu over the holidays, though the flu test was negative. My provider told me she had seen many cases that were not testing positive but obviously, like me, had the flu.

She recommended that once i recovered, I still get the flu shot for extra protection. I don't know if I will, given the miss match? But maybe it provides additional protection.

I did get tamiflu, and while i was till pretty sick for 5 or so days, and still have a slight cough 11 days after being mostly recovered, I do think tamiflu shortened the experience and it wasn't as bad as the two previous times I've had the flu.

It's been more than a week of flu A and I'm still not a 100%, with the shot and everything. Ugh.

Hand washing only helps a little bit. Try hand washing and Masking when out and about, especially at medical facilities. But really I do it for Target/grocery store/public transportation/etc as well, because I prefer not to be sick.

I finally convinced my college kid to get it. It’s no longer a matter of me taking her.
