Jersey is the way to go if driving. You cut out a lot of potential city traffic. Hoboken has direct service to Midtown. Jersey City requires a transfer.

Only issue with Jersey is that if you want to take a break during the day- such as clean and freshen up before dinner, you’re limited.  Also, was in NYC once and got caught in rain showers, so we had to go back to hotel for dry clothes.  Harder to do that if you’re in Jersey.[/quote]
Not if your hotel is next to a PATH station. Hoboken to Penn Station is 15 minutes. Exchange Place to WTC is 5 minutes. Ride times are very close to Long Island City plus the benefit of not having to drive through the city to get to your rental (and drive through it again to get back.)[/quote]

I'm not going to say it's exactly as easy but it's also really not a big hassle.

We have an elderly dog who can't be boarded so it really limits our hotel options. Last time we did an NYC trip we rented an airbnb along the Metro North and took the train in. Was it as convenient as staying in the city? Of course not. Realistically though, it only took about 45 minutes each way to get into the city. Obviously we didn't have a choice but if we did and it meant saving several hundred a night, 90 minutes a day on a clean, comfotable train that I can even drink a beer on is a tradeoff I would be happy to make.
