I am so not cool with this.

And if you’re the OP who is perplexed that that they cannot find a hotel in NYC for NYE, you are doing this, taking a ferry, staying in NJ, etc.

OP pay up or stay home.

Jersey is the way to go if driving. You cut out a lot of potential city traffic. Hoboken has direct service to Midtown. Jersey City requires a transfer.

Only issue with Jersey is that if you want to take a break during the day- such as clean and freshen up before dinner, you’re limited. Also, was in NYC once and got caught in rain showers, so we had to go back to hotel for dry clothes. Harder to do that if you’re in Jersey.

Not if your hotel is next to a PATH station. Hoboken to Penn Station is 15 minutes. Exchange Place to WTC is 5 minutes. Ride times are very close to Long Island City plus the benefit of not having to drive through the city to get to your rental (and drive through it again to get back.)

Hard disagree. If I am visiting NYC, I am staying in NYC. The only exception might be is if all I’m doing is going to some kind of event and not doing anything else in the city.

Have you been to Hoboken? It may as well be part of NYC. It's historic, walkable, has lots of upscale shops and restaurants, and is a quick train or ferry ride from Manhattan (plus there are fantastic skyline views). I'll give you that Jersey City is significantly less charming (as is LIC). In any event, LIC is "the city," but if you're intending to spend a lot of time in Manhattan it's just a matter of which train you want to ride on . . . the PATH or the 7 train.

I’m the PP. I have not been to Hoboken. I have been to Jersey City and it is actually pretty nice. It also has great views of lower Manhattan. Still if I’m doing multiple things in NYC, I prefer to stay in NYC. We take Amtrak, so it’s pretty easy. Also, I have actually stayed in Jersey City and hotel prices were very similar to NYC.

If I’m staying out late in the city or seeing a show, the last thing I want to do is get myself to Penn Station or WTC after so I can get on another train to NJ.

It’s a PATH train. It’s essentially a subway. The trains run frequently and it’s very easy to transfer.

Then take an Uber or a cab. They will take you to Hoboken. How do you think we get around in the city? Do you think I only go out in my neighborhood? It takes me as long to get to the lower east side and Brooklyn as it does to get to Hoboken.

There are two kinds of people in this world: the kind that stay in NYC and the kind that convince themselves it’s just as easy to visit NYC by staying in NJ.

I'm not going to say it's exactly as easy but it's also really not a big hassle.

We have an elderly dog who can't be boarded so it really limits our hotel options. Last time we did an NYC trip we rented an airbnb along the Metro North and took the train in. Was it as convenient as staying in the city? Of course not. Realistically though, it only took about 45 minutes each way to get into the city. Obviously we didn't have a choice but if we did and it meant saving several hundred a night, 90 minutes a day on a clean, comfotable train that I can even drink a beer on is a tradeoff I would be happy to make.

DP. Sheraton Lincoln Harbor sold out for NYE. Plus expensive to take cab back from Manhattan. We used ferry in AM and bus back from Penn Station (too downscale for holiday treat).

Agree, it’s not easy to get back to Weehawken.

It's pretty easy to get back and forth from NYC to Hoboken. I live in NYC and have a good friend in Hoboken who I visit fairly often. The ride on the PATH is all of ten minutes from WTC, and it's a very easy transfer from the subway.

I mean I’ve done both, and if I have a car, I’m choosing Jersey every time.
