I have an acquaintance who admitted to having no working smoke detectors in their home, which they share with their 4 young children. Their excuse? They are a light sleeper, so it would be fine. I challenged them, assuming they were joking, but no, they were dead serious. I can’t stop thinking about it, and about how quiet fires are, and how deadly they can be without being loud, and that this is exactly why smoke detectors exist. I tried explaining but it fell on deaf ears. I don’t want to mess up this person’s life, or the kids, I just wish they’d be forced to install working detectors. Would I be wasting my time? What would you do?
Not CPS but in have done so with the fire department. They came out to the block and did fire alarm checks for everyone. The FD was great to work with. If you’re not a mandated reporter, then go that route.
