I am genuinely curious how UVA maintains this elitist reputation when predominant in-state kids are only paying about $25k tuition? UMD does not even begin to have the same cache as the best in-state option. Great academics, of course, but never elitist.
Elitist? I don't buy that at all. I am not sure it is "elite" either but certainly you could make the argument. Quite simply: it is much more selective than UMD. It has a much higher middle 50% SAT range than UT Austin. It has a higher percentage of students finishing in four years than Berkeley or Michigan. UVA is strong in every category.
At the risk of being attacked (and I did not go to UVA) - I am a 6th generation Virginian (not from Nova originally.) The reason I think UVA is like this is that many Virginians are very protective of Virginia, would never leave permanently, plan to raise their families here, and in general just think Virginia (the state) is the bees knees. It’s kind of the way people talk about pride in Texas, just a little quieter. So, with that background in mind, if you are a bright high achieving high schooler who views Virginia (the state) as your end goal, being near family, and in general just creating the same life you were raised in, there is no reason to leave the state for college. And in sort of a provincial (for lack of a better word) way, many lifelong Virginias do view UVA as the be-all-end-all. Yes I know tons on this site think it’s overrated. I’m honestly not sure you could understand what I’m saying if you aren’t a multi generation Virginia, especially with ties outside of Nova. Hope that helps.
