Elitist? I don't buy that at all. I am not sure it is "elite" either but certainly you could make the argument.

Quite simply: it is much more selective than UMD. It has a much higher middle 50% SAT range than UT Austin. It has a higher percentage of students finishing in four years than Berkeley or Michigan. UVA is strong in every category.

At the risk of being attacked (and I did not go to UVA) - I am a 6th generation Virginian (not from Nova originally.) The reason I think UVA is like this is that many Virginians are very protective of Virginia, would never leave permanently, plan to raise their families here, and in general just think Virginia (the state) is the bees knees. It’s kind of the way people talk about pride in Texas, just a little quieter.

So, with that background in mind, if you are a bright high achieving high schooler who views Virginia (the state) as your end goal, being near family, and in general just creating the same life you were raised in, there is no reason to leave the state for college. And in sort of a provincial (for lack of a better word) way, many lifelong Virginias do view UVA as the be-all-end-all. Yes I know tons on this site think it’s overrated. I’m honestly not sure you could understand what I’m saying if you aren’t a multi generation Virginia, especially with ties outside of Nova.

Hope that helps.

Maybe you should educate yourself before posting next time. Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Yale, and almost all southern universities were built upon the slave industry. https://www.apmreports.org/episode/2017/09/04/shackled-legacy#:~:text=Profits%20from%20slavery%20and%20related,and%20served%20faculty%20and%20students.

I am educated. I wasn't talking about other universities.

No, you're not. You thought it was only UVA. Here are 14 universities built on the backs of slaves. And many many other smaller ones not mentioned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_at_American_colleges_and_universities#Barnard_College

No, I did not think it was only UVa. But the post was about that particular school. Reading comprehension helps.

He did wear a polo to the football game when we came down to visit. Should I be worried that he's snobby now?

I do think the "snob" reputation had some merit decades ago (when it was not nearly as difficult to be accepted, interestingly). The UVA of today is an excellent school academically that offers so many opportunities for involvement. DD is there and loving her experience, with a huge, diverse group of friends.

NP. Where did PP say they thought it was only UVA? This thread is about UVA.

UVA sits alone on a throne of uncompromised excellence in Virginia.

Honestly, you don’t sound well educated. Let me guess, your kid will NEVER go to school in a red state. LOL

Sounds like someone, or their spawn, wasn't admitted.

Perhaps it sounds that way to you, but it ain't so. I was admitted, but went elsewhere.

What does a quarter zip have to do with anything? Because the kids don’t wear pajamas to class? I guess it is a social class thing. My high schooler wears quarter zips to school from October until May and has since 9th grade. So do all his friends. They have a dress code at their private school, so for them these clothes are a habit.

I was just discussing this very point with my food taster and my ball sack valet.
