There are plenty of excellent schools where your kid can apply ED by November 15.

A reasonable response.  Have the kid transfer their ED loyalties elsewhere.  They can convert the app to RD.

If this is the purity test, your kid will probably be happier at Cornell anyway.  It's a more liberal school.
