I think it came up a couple times when I was pregnant and a new mom when I ran google searches for things like "nanny shares dc" or "moms groups dc." I think the first few times I was on the site, I probably didn't really even register what it was. It was just a random message board that maybe had a small tidbit of info that was useful to me. I never explored the site beyond those search results. At that point, even if you'd said "DCUM" to me, I would have said "what's that." Then during Covid, I started googling broader questions like "when will DCPS schools reopen?" or "is everyone still masking outside in DC?" And I got DCUM hits again, but this time I stuck around and read more than a couple responses and got to know the site. I actually become VERY addicted to the site during Covid, it became a major outlet for me during that time when no one around here was going out much and my social life was down to just my husband, my 2 year old, my cat, and a couple weekly video calls with friends. I've tried to quit it a few times and never succeeded. My presence on the site ebbs and flows a little bit depending on my mood and my workload. I don't think I've ever hit those Covid levels again though. Back then I spent hours a day on the site, sometimes late into the night instead of sleeping because I had terrible insomnia. I don't know if it was good or bad. It was something.
