Why is there so much reluctance to book drivers for speeding? I have lived off River Rd in Bethesda for 9 years and the majority of drivers go more than 10 mph over the speed limit unless it’s very congested. However, I have only seen a police officer with a radar gun a handful of times. And, yes, I see the aftermath of accidents ALL the time. Putting a speed trap on the road twice a week would easily pay for itself and more until the desired effect of changing behaviours is achieved.
Because your nimby desire for reduced traffic in your neighborhood is less important than the smooth flow of people to their destinations. River rd can safely accommodate faster speeds than the posted limits. In a poorer neighborhood with fewer lawyers a road like that would have a higher speed limit. I agree with you on reckless driving but cameras that look for just that won't "pay for itself". Whereas AI could easily do it. I'd love to see AI cameras that catch people scrolling their phones, even when stopped at red lights.
