I think in the case of Vance, he needed to adopt some Christian religion to be a credible MAGA spokesperson.  Particularly since his wife and kids are Hindu.[/quote]

Why not?  It’s pretty obvious.  I think we’re all just shrprised he picked Catholic.  You can pick a Protestant religion and it’s much easier to blend it and do it your way because it’s so much more loosy goosy.  Catholicism and established doctrine and practices so if you deviate, it’s more notable.[/quote]

I’m not clear about that. As a Protestant, being a mainline Protestant might have been too “elitist “ for the kind of political base that he would like to appeal to.  Being an evangelical Christian would have boxed him in to very specific political, religious, and social influences, vs being Catholic— and there’s always the possibility that being Catholic might connect him with broad support (before becoming Trump’s VP pick).  I also think that he might be genuinely attracted to the structure and focus on exclusively male power within the Catholic Church.  [/quote]
