In pretty much every mainline Christian denomination’s interpretation, one of the most important reasons why Jesus was rejected as Messiah was precisely for failing to deliver political liberation from Roman rule for His people. “Render unto Cesar . . . what is Cesar’s” and “My kingdom is not of this world.”

Indeed, there is simply no way that Pilate would have tried to release Jesus from crucifixion if Pilate perceived Jesus to be political in the slightest bit. The Romans were keenly aware of the Maccabean Revolt and Jesus, if political, would have been seen as a material threat by Pilate.

While Jesus is a political figure in a way for trying to our modern eyes and we are called to bring justice to the world, the idea of Jesus as some kind of Ghandi or MLK-like figure engaged in the political process is just off.

I’m not clear about that. As a Protestant, being a mainline Protestant might have been too “elitist “ for the kind of political base that he would like to appeal to. Being an evangelical Christian would have boxed him in to very specific political, religious, and social influences, vs being Catholic— and there’s always the possibility that being Catholic might connect him with broad support (before becoming Trump’s VP pick). I also think that he might be genuinely attracted to the structure and focus on exclusively male power within the Catholic Church.

Agree and I think Catholicism is more outwardly performative (traditions etc) which helps him show is commitment is real.

He didn’t know what his MOS would be when he ENLISTED (not commissioned). For all he knew at the time of his enlistment, he was heading for the infantry. His ASVAB score put him on a different trajectory but he had no idea where he was heading when he entered service. Yes, volunteering to risk your life in defense of the country as an enlisted man or woman is far better than anything any of those other four clowns did. Additionally, MCRD is no joke.

I utterly reject that. Most people who enlist do so because they have no other choice, professionally. Yes, I honor them if they get injured or die in service, certainly: I'm not heartless. But don't be all starry-eyed about why people enlist, PP. It's usually for personal practical reasons.

And for this person we're talking about, I have no doubt he's an opportunist looking to climb to the top in whatever way he can. He never had any morals or principles, and he's certainly not an example of a good Catholic.
